Our Story
The K-14 Motel was started after a revelation, loving photography doesn’t mean you have to actually take photos. I’ve always been fascinated by the technical and design aspects but I’ve never really loved actually taking photos.
But there are many hobbies that people can appreciate the results without partaking in the process. Think about all the people who enjoy watching baseball but don’t actively play it.
There is something so exciting about viewing a vintage photo. Photography is the only reliable way to time travel. Photos capture a moment in time that you can’t ever see again. There is just something about the 50s & 60s that I can’t get over. The fashion, the architecture, the design, it’s all so amazing.
All the photos you’ll find here are “found photos”. Basically someone decided to sell their old slides and instead of letting them waste away in some dusty antique shop I find them and give them a second life by scanning them and putting them online.
Our favorite period of time is also the time period where motels reigned supreme. Take our love of Motels and the development process of our favorite film, Kodachrome, K-14, and you get the K-14 Motel.
Management
The hotel is managed by Nick Hamze. Nick’s history with photography goes all the way back to to 1995 when he was 10 years old. At school, they gave every kid a disposable camera and asked them to photograph something in their community that needs improvement.
In one of the biggest upsets in history when the photos were judged they awarded Nick second place when he clearly deserved first.
